Baldan Bereeven Monastery

The monastery traces its origins back to 1777, when a Mongolian monk named Tseveendorj built a small temple at the foot of Munkh-Olziit Mountain in what is now Bayan-Zurkh bag of Ömnödelger Soum. He also commissioned the creation of a stone statue of Manzushri Buddha, marking the foundation of what would later become one of Mongolia’s most significant religious institutions.

Over time, Baldan Bereeven grew into a vast monastic center housing approximately 5,000–6,000 monks at its peak. It became the dominant religious and educational institution in eastern Mongolia and played a central role in shaping the region’s spiritual and cultural life.

At its height, the monastery included four major monastic schools and around 20 temples (dugans) where religious teachings and daily rituals were conducted continuously. It served not only as a place of worship but also as a center of learning, philosophy, and cultural development.

Photography

For the most impressive views, hike slightly up the hillside behind the monastery to capture a wide panoramic shot of the entire complex within the valley landscape. Rock carvings and Buddhist statues appear especially vivid when photographed under angled sunlight.

Respect and Conduct

As Baldan Bereeven is an active sacred site, visitors are expected to maintain silence, avoid loud behavior, and show proper respect to religious artifacts and practices throughout their visit.

Getting There

From Ulaanbaatar, travel via paved road to Omnodelger Soum, then continue approximately 60–70 km on rough terrain to reach the monastery. A high-clearance or off-road capable vehicle is strongly recommended due to the condition of the road.

Nearby Attractions

After visiting the monastery, travelers can continue their journey through Khentii’s historical landscape, including sites such as Binder Ovoo and Oglogchiin Kherem (Oglogchiin Wall), forming a rich cultural and historical route across the region.

• Зам харгуй: Улаанбаатараас Өмнөдэлгэр сум хүртэл nhựa замаар явж, сумын төвөөс хийд хүртэл бартаат замаар (ойролцоогоор 60-70 км) явдаг тул туулах чадвар сайтай машин хэрэгтэй.

• Ойр орчим: Хийдийг үзсэний дараа Хэнтий аймгийн бусад түүхэн газрууд болох Биндэр овоо, Өглөгчийн хэрэм орох маршрутаар аяллаа үргэлжлүүлж болно.
