Khar Bukh Balgas

Khar Bukh Balgas is the remains of the ancient Uyghur capital city, Ordu-Baliq, dating back to the 8th–9th centuries. It represents one of the most important archaeological sites in Central Asia, reflecting the urban culture and political power of the Uyghur Khaganate. Archaeological evidence shows that the site includes layers from different historical periods. Remains from the Khitan period (9th–10th century) have been found, and in the 17th century Mongols later built a small monastery within the ruins. The fortified city area covers roughly 500 × 500 meters, while the broader archaeological zone extends across a larger steppe landscape.
The city walls were constructed using an impressive technique that alternates volcanic rock and layered slate stone, demonstrating advanced engineering for its time. The site was placed under state protection in 1998.
Important discoveries include birch-bark manuscripts, Buddhist scriptures, and early Mongolian texts. Research led by scholars such as Kh. Perlee uncovered legal documents and alphabetic records from the 14th–15th centuries. Later Mongolian-Japanese joint expeditions also discovered over 60 pages of birch-bark writings and Tibetan manuscripts from the 16th–17th centuries.
These findings confirm that Khar Bukh Balgas was not only a political center but also a major cultural and religious hub, playing a significant role in the spread of Buddhism and written culture in Mongolia.

Location: Near Kharkhorin, about 40 km northeast in the region (steppe access routes vary by source and route).
Size: Archaeological complex covers approximately 32 km², with inner fortress walls about 600 × 600 meters.
Significance: One of the largest ancient urban ruins in Mongolia.
