Located in Bayan-Adarga, Khentii Province, in the picturesque Onon River Valley, the Duurlig Nars Hunnu Buriad Site is one of Mongolia's most significant archaeological monuments. As one of the largest known burial complexes of the Hunnu nobility, the site has made an invaluable contribution to the study of the ancient nomadic civilizations of Central Asia and has gained international recognition for its historical importance.
The Duurlig Nars archaeological site consists of an extensive cemetery of Hunnu aristocrats scattered throughout a pine forest south of the center of Bayan-Adarga Soum. Archaeologists have recorded 299 burial mounds, the majority of which are large elite tombs featuring entrance corridors—a characteristic burial style reserved for members of the Xiongnu ruling class. Researchers believe that these tombs belonged to the noble families of the eastern wing of the Hunnu Empire.
Excavations at Duurlig Nars have uncovered a remarkable collection of artifacts, reflecting the wealth and status of those buried there. Discoveries include bronze vessels, cauldrons, oil lamps, bronze mirrors, lacquered cups, decorative clothing ornaments, jade artifacts, iron spoons and strainers, horse harnesses, equestrian equipment, and the remains of ancient chariots. These findings provide valuable insight into the culture, craftsmanship, and daily life of the Hunnu aristocracy more than two thousand years ago.
