Kharakhorum was established in 1220 by Chinggis Khan as the capital of the Mongol Empire and was fully developed during the reign of Ogedei Khan around 1235. It served as the political, administrative, and cultural center of the empire, and was a key hub along the Silk Road, connecting East and West through trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

Archaeological remains at the site include foundations of ancient structures, city walls, and artifacts that reflect the cosmopolitan nature of the empire. Excavations have revealed evidence of diverse cultural influences, showing Kharakhorum as a truly international city of its time.

The Kharakhorum Museum was established to preserve and display artifacts discovered during excavations of the ancient capital. Built with support from Japanese cultural aid, it opened to the public in 2011.

The museum collection includes 3,128 registered artifacts, over 80% of which are archaeological finds. Among them, 63 items are officially classified as Mongolia’s most valuable cultural heritage objects. Exhibits include ceramics, metalwork, religious objects, and daily life artifacts from the Mongol Empire period.

TRAVEL TIPS

Because the ruins, museum, and Erdene Zuu Monastery are located in the same area, they can easily be visited together in one trip. The museum is situated on a raised terrace overlooking the ruins, allowing visitors to see the archaeological site immediately after learning about its history.

Best time to visit: June to September, when weather conditions are most comfortable and the landscape is green and accessible.
