Located in Delgerkhaan Soum of Khentii Province, within the valley of the Kherlen River, Kherlen’s Countryside Island is one of the most important historical and cultural heartlands of Mongolian statehood. This site is deeply connected to the political, economic, and spiritual history of the Great Mongol Empire and has left a lasting mark on world history.
Kherlen’s Countryside Island served as a historic political center where the Great Khuriltai (imperial council) was held, and where Khans such as Ogedei Khan, Mongke Khan, and Yesun Temur Khan were enthroned. The area also contains several small lakes, including Kherlen Lake, Toson Lake, Zamag Lake, and Tsagaan Lake.
At the foot of Kherlen Bayanuul Mountain lies a group of seven small hills known locally as the “Dolood” (The Seven Hills), including Dorvoljin, Suul, Ikh Ulaan Tolgoi, Baga Ulaan Tolgoi, Olon Ovoo, and Takhilgat Gatsaa. Some researchers believe these correspond to the “Seven Bolgod” mentioned in The Secret History of the Mongols.
It is also believed that The Secret History of the Mongols was completed in this region. To commemorate the 750th anniversary of this historical work in 1990, a 4-meter-tall monument dedicated to Chinggis Khaan and the Secret History of the Mongols was erected. The monument depicts Chinggis Khaan in a standing position, and its side surfaces include inscriptions from the concluding passages of the historical chronicle.
