Mongolian Queens' Palace Complex

Built on the Duurlig Nars Plateau, the memorial complex pays tribute to the influential women who played vital roles throughout different periods of Mongolian history. The site is especially meaningful because Bayan-Adarga is the birthplace of Tsendiin Dondogdulam and N. Genenpil, the consorts of Bogd Khan, the eighth Javzandamba Khutuktu and the last monarch of Mongolia.

The complex honors nine distinguished Mongolian queens, including Alan Gooa, who is celebrated for her wisdom and for raising her sons to become the founders of a great lineage; Oelun, the mother of Genghis Khan; Borte, Genghis Khan's principal queen and one of the Seven Treasures of the Mongolian State; Sorghaghtani Beki, the wise wife of Tolui; and Toregene Khatun, who ruled the Mongol Empire as regent for five years following the reign of Ogedei Khan. The memorial also commemorates Mandukhai the Wise, Khandjamts, the mother of Zanabazar (the First Jebtsundamba Khutuktu), Queen Anu, the courageous wife of Galdan Boshugtu Khan, and Dondogdulam, the beloved queen of Bogd Khan.

The centerpiece of the complex is a grand palace designed in the shape of the traditional ceremonial headdress worn by Mongolian queens. Surrounding the central palace are four large stupas and nine white gers, symbolizing the nine honored queens. Inside the main hall stands a royal throne dedicated to the queens, while portraits of each queen are displayed around the interior. At the center rises the Nine-Tailed White Banner, one of Mongolia's most sacred national symbols.
