Khar Yamaat is located in eastern Mongolia, on the border between the southeastern part of Bayan-Ovoo Soum in Khentii Province and the northwestern part of Tumentsogt Soum in Sukhbaatar Province. The highest point in the area is Tumentsogt Mountain, which rises to 1,358 meters above sea level.

The reserve consists of several notable mountains, including Dulaany Uul in the northern section, which contains small forest groves, Khar Yamaat Mountain in the central area, and Tumentsogt Mountain in the south. These mountains are characterized by unique geological formations that are rarely found within Mongolia’s steppe ecosystem. During winter, the area serves as one of the primary habitats for the Mongolian Gazelle. It is also located within the floodplain of the Kherlen River, providing an important stopover and resting site for migratory, water, and shorebird species.

Recognizing its exceptional biodiversity and distinctive geographical features, the area was designated as a Nature Reserve under Resolution No. 28 of the State Great Khural (Parliament) in 1998. The reserve aims to protect its fragile ecosystems and restore natural resources. Due to its ecological significance, research institutes of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences have conducted long-term scientific studies in the area since the 1980s.

The reserve contains approximately ten deep wells, including Yamaatiin Khudag and Adgiin Khudag. Forest groves of birch and poplar grow on the northern slopes of Khar Yamaat and Tumentsogt Mountains. The region features a variety of soil types, including dark mountain forest soils, mountain black soils on ridges and summits, and gravelly dark-brown soils across the surrounding hills and uplands.

Travel Tips

Navigation and Orientation
The reserve is located within an open steppe landscape with rocky hills and mountains, where it is possible to lose direction. Visitors are advised to carry a GPS device and download offline maps before traveling.

Nature Conservation
The area is protected in cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Visitors should strictly follow conservation guidelines by avoiding open fires, leaving no litter, and minimizing disturbance to wildlife.

Best Time to Visit
Spring and summer are the ideal seasons to visit, offering opportunities to observe wildlife moving among the rocky landscapes and to see rare plants in bloom. Due to the strong winds common in the steppe, campers should ensure that tents and equipment are securely anchored.
