Jargalant Khairkhan Mountain is a sacred peak rising 3,796 meters above sea level, located northeast of Manhan Soum in Khovd Province and southeast of Khar-Us Lake within the Khar-Us Lake Protected Area. It forms the eastern branch of the Mongol Altai Mountain Range and is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and rich biodiversity.

The mountain features several ecological zones, including alpine tundra, alpine meadows, mountain steppe, and dry steppe ecosystems. In the southern areas of Jargalant Khairkhan, such as Khar Sair, the headwaters of Tsagaan Sair, and the Tagiin Ridge, rare mountain ungulates inhabit the region throughout most of the year. However, livestock grazing often overlaps with wildlife habitats, leading to seasonal pasture shortages.

Among the globally threatened bird species found here are the Eastern Imperial Eagle, Saker Falcon, and Lesser Whitethroat. The area is also home to many bird species characteristic of the Eurasian high mountains, steppes, and deserts.

Rare and endangered mammals inhabiting the mountain include the Argali Sheep, Siberian Ibex, Snow Leopard, and Mongolian Marmot. Black-tailed Gazelles can also be seen along the lower western slopes. The mountain supports rare plant species such as wild mountain onions and Rhodiola rosea (Golden Root).

According to a snow leopard survey conducted in 2003, Jargalant Khairkhan Mountain may support a population of more than 20 snow leopards, making it one of Mongolia’s important habitats for this endangered species.
