Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs), also known internationally as the “Flaming Cliffs,” is one of the world’s most important paleontological sites. It is located in Bulgan soum of Omnogovi Province, Mongolia, and is widely recognized for its historical and scientific significance in dinosaur discoveries.
Bayanzag is a red sandstone and clay formation stretching roughly 8 km long and about 5 km wide, situated in the wide valley along the Arts Bogd mountain range. The area is known for its dense growth of saxaul trees and its striking red cliffs, which rise about 20–50 meters high. At sunset, the cliffs glow intensely red, resembling burning flames this visual effect inspired the name “Flaming Cliffs,” given by American researchers who studied the area in the 1920s.
This site became world-famous after the discovery of numerous dinosaur fossils, including eggs and skeletons dating back approximately 60–80 million years. These discoveries played a major role in placing Mongolia’s Gobi Desert on the global paleontological map. In addition, archaeological traces of ancient human activity some dating back over 40,000 years have also been found in the surrounding saxaul forests.
TRAVEL TIPS
Photography: The best time for photography is 1–2 hours before sunset, when the cliffs glow like fire under the evening light.
Fossils: Even today, fossilized bones and eggshell fragments can sometimes be found on the surface. However, it is strictly prohibited by law to collect or remove any natural or fossil materials.
Nearby attractions: Visitors can also explore the nearby Moltsog Els sand dunes, where camel riding experiences are available.
