Lake Khuvsgul, often called the “Blue Pearl of Mongolia,” is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world and a vital natural freshwater reserve. It is located within the territory of Alag-Erdene, Khanh, Renchinlkhumbe, and Chandmani-Undur soums of Khuvsgul Province.
The Lake Khuvsgul basin and its surrounding protected area were placed under state protection in 1992. This region alone contains about 1% of the world’s fresh water, making it an ecologically significant zone of global importance.
The lake and its surroundings are extremely rich in biodiversity. The area is home to 59 species of mammals, 244 species of birds including rare and endangered ones such as the whooper swan and the Altai snowcock and 12 species of fish including Siberian grayling and lenok. More than 750 plant species grow in the region, and about 28% of the territory is covered by Siberian taiga forest consisting of pine, larch, and spruce.
This taiga is also home to the Tsaatan people, a minority ethnic group with unique language, shamanistic traditions, and nomadic reindeer herding culture. They live in harsh climatic conditions where winter temperatures can drop to between -31°C and -50°C, continuing their traditional way of life in the forest.
