Yoliin Am is a deep and narrow gorge located in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of Omnogovi Province, Mongolia. It is famous for its unique microclimate where ice can persist even during much of the summer season, and for being a habitat for rare wildlife and birds. The gorge is named after the “Yol” (Lammergeier or bearded vulture), a bird native to the region.
The gorge lies at an average elevation of about 2,800 meters above sea level and covers a protected area of approximately 64 square kilometers. It is formed where a stream cuts through the eastern slope of the Zuun Saikhan Mountain, creating a narrow and dramatic canyon.
A small stream flows along the gorge floor, which freezes in winter. In past years, thick ice remained throughout the year, but due to climate change, most of it now melts during warmer seasons. However, shaded areas that receive little sunlight can still retain ice layers over one meter thick. After heavy rainfall, waterfalls may form along the cliffs. Because of the deep shade and limited sunlight, cold air circulates continuously through the gorge, creating a surprisingly cool environment even in summer.
From the bottom of the gorge, the sky appears as a thin blue strip far above, framed by steep rock walls that can reach up to 200 meters in height.
TRAVEL TIPS
Clothing:
Temperatures inside the gorge can drop sharply, so even in summer it is important to bring warm clothing and a windproof jacket.
Hiking:
Visitors usually drive to the entrance of the gorge and continue on foot or horseback for 2–3 km. Proper hiking shoes with good grip are recommended.
Museum:
A natural history museum at the entrance provides information about the local flora and fauna of the region.
Respect for Nature:
To protect the fragile ecosystem, visitors should avoid littering, making loud noises, or disturbing wildlife and ice formations.
