Located in Tsengel Soum of Bayan-Olgii Province, within the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain range, Potanin Glacier is the largest and longest glacier in Mongolia. This natural wonder is also an important scientific site for studying global warming and climate change.
Potanin Glacier is a mountain glacier named after the Russian explorer G.N. Potanin, who conducted expeditions across Mongolia between 1876 and 1899. It is recognized as the largest glacier in the country. The glacier originates near the Tsagaan River in the Altai Tavan Bogd area and extends approximately 20 km in length and 5 km in width. It is believed to have formed during the Quaternary period, around two million years ago.
Comprehensive studies of Mongolia’s glaciers were conducted in 1983 by geographers N. Dashzeveg, P. Khishigsüren, and R. Evelkhan, based on satellite imagery, field surveys, and previous research materials. They estimated the total glacier area at approximately 659 square kilometers, comprising around 262 individual glaciers. Later studies in 2005 revealed significant melting, with the glacier thinning by approximately 242–378 centimeters from lower to upper sections.
Travel Tips
Photography:
The best panoramic views of Potanin Glacier can be seen along the ascent to Malchin Peak, where the glacier stretches across the landscape in its full majesty. Close-up shots of the deep blue ice cracks and formations offer stunning photographic opportunities.
Safety:
Walking on the glacier requires extreme caution. Hidden crevasses beneath the snow can be dangerous, so visitors should always travel with a professional guide and use appropriate safety equipment such as ropes and protective gear.
Clothing:
Even during summer, the glacier environment is cold and windy. Windproof warm clothing is essential, along with sunglasses to protect against the intense glare of sunlight reflecting off the ice and snow.
