Darkhad Depression

The Darkhad Depression is part of the vast freshwater network that contributes to Mongolia's abundant water resources. The Delger River, the largest river in the region, forms one of the headwaters of the Selenge River, which eventually flows into Lake Baikal. Meanwhile, the Shishged River is one of the source rivers of the Yenisei River, which ultimately drains into the Arctic Ocean. The region's rivers and lakes support an exceptional diversity of freshwater fish, while its unique ecosystems provide habitat for many rare and endangered plant and animal species found in Mongolia and around the world.

Approximately 70% of Khovsgol's taiga forest is located within the Darkhad Depression. It is home to Mongolia's largest populations of moose and the iconic reindeer. The white lichen, the primary food source of reindeer, grows abundantly in this region. The indigenous Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders live in both the eastern and western taiga of Khovsgol, with around 60% of the Tsaatan community residing in the Eastern Taiga within the Darkhad Depression.

Photography:
For breathtaking panoramic views, photograph the Darkhad Depression from the slopes of the Khoridol Saridag Mountains, where the vast valley and its hundreds of shimmering lakes stretch to the horizon. One of the region's most iconic scenes is a herd of reindeer grazing through the morning mist.

Weather:
This region includes Renchinlkhumbe Soum, one of the coldest inhabited areas in Mongolia. Even during summer, temperatures can drop suddenly, and rain is common. Visitors should bring warm clothing, waterproof gear, and be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.

Getting There:

Roads leading into the Darkhad Depression are rugged, muddy, and often require crossing rivers. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential, while horseback travel remains one of the best ways to explore the remote taiga landscapes

Хөвсгөл аймгийн нутагт Хорьдол сарьдагийн нурууны баруун талд оршдог. Дархадын хотгорт Монголын 36 томоохон голын бэлчир оршдог. Нийтдээ 248 жижиг том гол горхи, 377 нуур цөөрмийн тогтоц, 24 рашаан булгийн ундарга бүхий их усны хагалбар газар юм. 

Цэнгэг усны 95 хувийг бүрдүүлдэг. Эндээс Сэлэнгэ мөрөн эх авч урсдаг бөгөөд түүнээс салаалсан олон гол Байгаль нуурт цутгадаг. Голуудын хамгийн том нь Дэлгэр мөрөн юм. Шишгэд гол Енесэй мөрөний эх болдог ба эцэст нь Хойд мөсөн далайд цутгадаг. Дархадын хотгор орчмын гадагшаа урсгалгүй гол горхи, нуур цөөрөм бүрт олон төрлийн загас амьдардаг. Байгаль экологийн өвөрмөц сонин зүй тогтол бүхий энэ бүс нутагт Монголын төдийгүй дэлхийд ховордсон ургамал амьтны баялаг нөөц бий.

Дархадын хотгорт Хөвсгөлийн их тайгын 70% нь оршдог бөгөөд Монголын хамгийн том хөхтөн хандгай, цаа бугын өлгий нутаг билээ. Цаа бугын тэжээл болох цагаан хөвд нь зөвхөн Дархадын хотгорт ургадгаараа онцлог. Цаатан ард түмэн нь 2 хуваагдан Хөвсгөлийн  баруун, зүүн тайгад амьдардаг бөгөөд уугуул цаатангуудын 60% нь зүүн тайга буюу Дархадын хотгорт амьдардаг ажээ.

• Цаг агаар: Энэ бүс нутаг нь Монгол орны хамгийн хүйтэн цэгүүдийн нэг юм (Ренчинлхүмбэ сум). Зун ч гэсэн гэнэт хүйтрэх, бороо орох магадлал өндөр тул дулаан хувцас, усны хамгаалалттай хэрэглэл заавал авч явах хэрэгтэй.

• Зам харгуй: Дархадын хотгор руу хүрэх зам бартаа ихтэй, намаг шавартай, олон гол гаталдаг. Тиймээс туулах чадвар маш сайн машин болон мориор аялах нь хамгийн тохиромжтой байдаг.
