Gurmiin Lake

According to local legend, an elderly herder named Gurne, who owned only a few goats, once lived near the lake. Over time, the lake came to be known as Gurmiin Lake, derived from his name. During the socialist era, a dairy processing factory operated on the lake's western shore. It is said that the voices of the milkmaids working there every morning and evening could be heard all the way to the soum center.

Today, Gurmiin Lake lies approximately 7 km northeast of Bayan-Ovoo Soum Center at an elevation of 918 meters above sea level, nestled in a natural depression. The lake has a shoreline of about 10 km and a depth ranging from 4 to 7 meters.

Fine aquatic grasses grow beneath the water and are often pushed onto the shore by wind during spring and autumn. The lake also serves as an important seasonal habitat where migratory birds arrive to nest and spend the summer. The black and yellow medicinal mud found along the shoreline is widely used for therapeutic purposes. Experts have determined that its properties are very similar to the healing mud of Avrag Toson Lake.

Photography

For the best photographs, climb to the top of the nearby sand dunes and capture the lake at sunset. The striking contrast between the golden sand and the deep blue water creates spectacular scenery.

Getting There

From Ulaanbaatar, drive to Batnorov Soum, then continue southeast along an unpaved road to reach the lake. The road is in relatively good condition, making it accessible by a standard passenger car.

What to Bring

As the area surrounding Gurmiin Lake is sandy and semi-desert, daytime temperatures can become quite hot, especially during the summer months. Visitors are advised to bring a sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water to stay comfortable and protected throughout their trip.

Gurmiin Lake has a fragile ecosystem that should be treated with care. Visitors are encouraged to help preserve its natural beauty by taking all their litter with them and parking their vehicles at a reasonable distance from the lakeshore to reduce environmental impact and protect the surrounding habitat.
