Burdene Spring is a remarkable natural attraction located 27 kilometers southwest of the center of Erdene Soum in Dornogovi Province. Covering an area of more than 11.1 hectares, it is renowned for its beautiful combination of sand dunes, natural springs, and unique Gobi Desert scenery.
Within the steep sand dunes lie 108 natural springs, grassy wetlands, wells, shrubs, and trees. More than 200 years ago, when the renowned Buddhist scholar and spiritual leader Danzanravjaa established a monastery in the area, a special religious practice was carried out here. Monks and visitors would spend one day at each of the 108 springs, reciting prayers and performing the ritual known as Luijin. The site served as a place where monks and devotees were trained in these practices. Even today, Buddhist monks specializing in Lüijin meditation occasionally visit the area for retreats lasting three to seven days.
(Luijin is a Buddhist ritual and prayer practice traditionally performed at dusk or during the night to cleanse negative energies and impurities of the body, speech, and mind.)
To the north of the springs stands Dogmiddorj Mountain, often referred to as the “Fierce Guardian of the Steppe.” Fossilized animal bones and ancient petrified wood have been discovered in this area. The ruins of the historic monastery can still be found on the mountain slope.
Since 2000, a sand therapy and health resort specializing in kidney-related treatments has operated near Burdene Spring. The resort is open annually from June 15 through August and can accommodate between 50 and 80 visitors. Accommodation and dining facilities are supported by the local soum administration.
The resort was originally established by the Third Central Hospital of Ulaanbaatar. Visitors can enjoy traditional camel milk beverages, locally grown watermelons, and therapeutic hot sand treatments. The area also offers opportunities to explore sand dunes, green meadows, springs, wells inhabited by frogs, and a variety of characteristic Gobi Desert plants, including saxaul, zygophyllum, and other native species.
