Tolbo Lake

The lake covers an area of 185 square kilometers, with a maximum length of 21.5 kilometers and a width of 6 kilometers. It lies at an elevation of 2,080 meters above sea level. The surrounding landscape is enclosed by relatively low mountain ranges and rocky hills rising between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above the lake. Several small islands can be found within the lake, the largest of which is Gichgenii Tolgoi Island, standing only about 4 meters above the water surface.

Tolbo Lake is also renowned for the historic Battle of Tolbo Lake, an important event associated with the Mongolian People's Revolution of 1921. Around 160 Mongolian and Soviet soldiers led by Khasbaatar and Baikalov fought against approximately 2,400 White Russian troops commanded by Kaigorodov and Bakich, followers of Baron Ungern.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mongolian-Soviet forces vowed to stand together “in life or death” and endured a 42-day siege. After exhausting their food supplies, they survived on whatever was available, including dog and cat meat, and eventually even boiled and chewed pieces of saddle leather to stay alive. Rather than surrender, they chose to continue fighting and ultimately succeeded in breaking through the encirclement. The White Russian forces launched two major assaults, both of which failed.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR VISITORS

Roadside Stop and Relaxation:
Tolbo Lake is located along the main highway connecting Ölgii and Khovd. It is an ideal place to stop during your journey, enjoy the scenery, take photographs, or have a picnic by the lakeshore.

Swimming and Fishing:
The lake’s water is exceptionally clear, but due to its high-altitude location, it remains very cold even during summer. Visitors who wish to swim should exercise caution. Those interested in fishing should check permit requirements in advance.

Historical Monument:
A memorial commemorating the Battle of Tolbo Lake stands near the lake. History enthusiasts are highly encouraged to visit this important landmark.
