Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes

Stretching for nearly 80 kilometers, the sand dunes extend from the western slopes of Batkhaan Mountain to the western side of Khogno Khan Mountain, crossing the territories of Erdenesant Soum (Tov Province), Burd Soum (Ovorkhangai Province), and Gurvanbulag Soum (Bulgan Province). The main highway divides the dunes into two sections: the southern part is known as Mongol Els (Mongolian Sands), while the northern section is called Khogno Tarnyn Els.

Moisture from the Tarniin River supports the growth of shrubs such as willow, elm, and other native vegetation among the dunes. To the north rises the rocky Khogno Khan Mountain, while to the south stands Ikh Mongol Mountain, traditionally regarded as marking the geographical center of Mongolia. The dunes reach their greatest width of 9–10 kilometers near the confluence of the Sharlin and Jargalant Rivers, which form the headwaters of the Tarniin River.

The Mongol Els dunes are partially stabilized by vegetation, so they generally experience limited movement. However, in recent years, overgrazing has exceeded the area's carrying capacity, causing parts of the dunes to become more mobile.

Photography:
The best time to photograph the dunes is at sunrise or sunset, when the rippling sand and dramatic shadows create breathtaking scenery. A classic shot features a caravan of camels crossing the dunes with Khogno Khan Mountain in the background.

Activities:
Visitors can enjoy camel riding across the dunes, try sandboarding, or hike the scenic trails of Khogno Khan Mountain, which offers spectacular panoramic views.

Elsen Tasarkhai is conveniently located along the main highway between Ulaanbaatar and Kharkhorin, making it easily accessible by any type of passenger vehicle.
