Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of the closest major tourist destinations to Ulaanbaatar, featuring a unique combination of mountain ranges, rock formations, forests, and rivers in the southern branch of the Khentii Mountains. It is located about 50–76 km east of Ulaanbaatar and covers the southern part of the Baga Khentii mountain range, the headwaters of the Tuul River, and the basin of the Zaan-Terelj River. The area is famous for its striking rock formations and scenic landscapes.

The highest point in the region is Avkhaan Mountain, standing at 2,664 meters above sea level. The landscape consists of steep rocky mountains formed from granite and siliceous shale, along with river valleys. It is rich in flora and fauna and has a history of mineral extraction, including water and smoky quartz mining up until the 1960s.

Today, the area hosts more than 100 tourist camps and resorts. Among its many natural attractions are the famous Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad), Camel Rock, and the Three Friends Cave. The 24-meter-high Turtle Rock is associated with a local legend that it was once called “Mongot Khad” (Money Rock), linked to a story of a woman who, according to folklore, hid gold and silver coins within the rock’s crevices after a tragic fate involving her husband.

TRAVEL TIPS

Photography:
The best panoramic shots can be taken from the Aryabal Meditation Temple area during sunset, capturing the entire valley. Close-up and distant shots of Turtle Rock (especially from the eastern valley side) also produce excellent compositions.

Clothing and Preparation:
As this is a mountainous region with rapidly changing weather, even if it is sunny during the day, evenings can become cold. Warm clothing and hiking shoes are highly recommended.

Nearby Attractions:

On the way to Terelj, you can enhance your trip by trying traditional fermented mare’s milk (airag), and visiting the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue Complex (Tsonjin Boldog) as well as the “13th Century Complex” for a richer cultural experience.
