Khongor Sand Dunes

The dunes lie along the northern slopes of the Sevrei and Zuulongiin mountain ranges and cover an area of about 965 square kilometers. They extend from northwest to southeast, reaching up to 27 km in width in the western section and narrowing to about 800 meters in the central area. From the top of the dunes, visitors can see endless rolling sand hills stretching into the distance.

The landscape is especially striking because of its contrasts: rocky mountains in the south, vast shifting dunes in the center, and a green river oasis along the northern edge. The Khongor dunes are mobile and constantly shaped by wind, making the scenery ever-changing.

The highest section is known as the “Singing Dune,” where heated sand grains slide and create a low roaring or humming sound when the wind moves across them.

TRAVEL TIPS

Climbing the Dunes:
Reaching the top requires effort, but the panoramic view is unforgettable. Early morning or late evening is best, when the sand is cooler and easier to walk on.

Transportation:
A 4x4 vehicle with an experienced driver is essential for traveling across desert terrain. Specialized desert driving techniques improve safety.

Camel Riding:
Camel trekking along the Khongor River oasis is one of the highlights of a Gobi desert trip.

Safety Notice:
Sudden desert winds can cause sandstorms and reduce visibility, so it is recommended to travel with GPS and a local guide.
