Located about 65 km from Ulaanbaatar within the Gorkhi-Terelj tourist area of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) is one of the most iconic natural landmarks of Terelj National Park. This uniquely shaped granite formation resembles a giant turtle and has become a symbol of the region.
Near Turtle Rock, on its northwestern side, there is another striking formation resembling a reclining human figure gazing calmly toward the sky. Locals consider the surrounding area, sometimes referred to as Khuukhen Mountain, to be a sacred and powerful place. Traditionally, people do not collect plants, onions, or nuts from the area, nor disturb its rocks, as it is believed to be a spiritually significant and somewhat powerful mountain. At the same time, it is also considered especially favorable to women.
For centuries, locals have revered this formation also known as “Mongot Tsokhio” (Money Rock) offering food and dairy products, and praying for prosperity, fortune, and blessings.
Travel Tips
Photography:
For the best images of Turtle Rock’s “head,” it is recommended to shoot from the eastern side or nearby hills. Early morning or late afternoon light enhances the rock’s texture, making its natural contours more vivid and lifelike.
Climbing:
Visitors often climb up to the “neck” area of Turtle Rock. However, the surface can be smooth and slippery, so proper footwear and caution are strongly advised.
Nearby Attractions:
Camel and horse riding experiences are available right next to Turtle Rock. Additionally, the Aryabal Meditation Temple, located about 2 km away, can be reached on foot and is a popular extension of the visit.
